Grassroots Racing
Introduction by Chase J
“What is this? Are you in charge?”, The RCMP officer asks firmly but inquisitively, as I stand at the showtime corner of Britannia. “I don’t know, no I’m not.” I reply, as I’m holding a clipboard with racers names or aliases on it. ” Is that a list of names may I see it? He inquires. “Absolutely not, I do not have permission to give you this” I said. And that’s how the Britannia championship outlaw covid-era time trial started. You win most, lose some. There have been a few times the cops have showed up to bust our fun but for the most part outlaw races prevail, because we are a clandestine crew, ninjas of the night, stealthy speed freaks. This is the Coast Longboarding community. We look out for one another.
The 2025 Coast Outlaw Series is in its 6th unofficial year. What we know now as the coast outlaw series was preceded by equally important grassroots outlaw skateboard races in greater Vancouver area and across British Columbia. There have been many important people in the downhill skateboarding community to take up the mantle and gather the masses; Skull Skates, STRIKER – Coast Longboarding, N.U.A.C – Northern Underground Adrenaline Circuit; Jody, Les & Danny & Mischa @ Flatspot, Kady, L.M.O.S – Lower Mainland Outlaw Series; Grizz, Danny C, RedEyez, Team Green, Team Ridge, Team Wild, Switchback longboards, Shithawks DH,
Max K-Salt Spring Slip&Slide and Slasher, JM Banting and Kyle B on Van Island, Team Irene on the Sunshine Coast, Yardwaste in Abby and the Fraser Valley, Abby Skate School, Fraser Valley Downhill Association, and of course Team Pizza.
I’ve learned a lot from those that came before me hosting races and I learn more every time we host a race. It takes a village to host a race for speed freaks and this community delivers every time. “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these skaters from the swift completion of their underground races“. Okay the snow has rescheduled a race before I’ll admit.
This year will have many favourite tracks return, with a new one or two tracks thrown in there. It is possible schedules may change but as much as possible we will stick to what we have planned. Nine outlaw races in 2025 in the series and a handful of other grassroots outlaw races throughout the year. Have fun and I’ll see you at the next riders meeting.
